Where to Buy Authentic Kerala Lottery Tickets: Authorised Channels and What to Avoid

Buying a Kerala lottery ticket should be simple: walk up to a licensed agent, pick a ticket, pay ₹40, and you are done. But with counterfeit tickets and illegal online platforms muddying the waters, knowing exactly where to buy is the first step in protecting yourself.

Authorised Lottery Agents

The primary and most common channel for purchasing Kerala lottery tickets is through authorised agents. These are individuals or shops that hold a valid license issued by the Directorate of State Lotteries, Kerala.

Key things about authorised agents:

  • Every agent must display their license number at their selling point. This is usually a printed certificate or card visible at the counter.
  • There are approximately 50,000 authorised agents across Kerala, meaning you are rarely far from a legitimate seller.
  • Agents purchase tickets from the department at a fixed rate and earn their income from the margin. They do not charge customers above the official price.
  • Agents are also the first point of contact for small prize claims (up to ₹5,000).

For tips on finding and verifying agents, read our dedicated guide to finding authorised agents.

Sub-Agents and Resellers

In addition to primary agents, there are sub-agents who operate under a licensed agent's umbrella. Sub-agents are common in:

  • Rural areas with fewer primary agent outlets
  • Busy marketplaces and commercial areas where agents deploy helpers
  • Near temples, hospitals, and government offices

Sub-agents sell genuine tickets at the official price. However, since they may not always display their own license (they operate under the primary agent's license), it is advisable to verify the ticket's authenticity using the visual checks described in our guide.

District Lottery Offices

Each of Kerala's 14 districts has a District Lottery Office. While these offices primarily handle prize claims and administration, some also sell tickets directly. If you want absolute certainty about ticket authenticity, buying from a District Lottery Office is the gold standard.

District Lottery Office locations:

  • Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam
  • Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

Contact details for each office are available on the official Kerala State Lottery website and through the central helpline at 0471-2305230.

There Are No Online Sales — Period

This cannot be emphasised enough: there is no legal way to buy Kerala lottery tickets online. The Government of Kerala, through GO(P) No. 4/2005/TD, explicitly prohibits the online sale of state lottery tickets.

Any website, mobile app, WhatsApp group, or social media account claiming to sell Kerala lottery tickets is operating illegally. Common tactics these platforms use:

  • Taking payment and sending photographs of tickets (which may be counterfeit or not purchased at all)
  • Offering "digital tickets" that have no legal standing
  • Running "syndicates" where you pool money to buy tickets — but the tickets may never be purchased
  • Disappearing after collecting enough payments from trusting customers

If you live outside Kerala and want to buy tickets, you need someone physically present in the state to purchase them from an authorised agent. There is no remote alternative.

Official Pricing

Kerala lottery tickets have fixed, non-negotiable prices set by the department:

  • All weekly lotteries: ₹40 per ticket
  • Summer Bumper: ₹200
  • Vishu Bumper: ₹400
  • Monsoon Bumper: ₹250
  • Onam Bumper: ₹500
  • Pooja Bumper: ₹300
  • Christmas New Year Bumper: ₹400

Agents are not permitted to sell above or below these prices. A ticket offered at ₹30 "as a discount" is likely counterfeit. A ticket sold at ₹50 is an agent overcharging, which is a violation of their license terms — report it to the District Lottery Office.

What to Avoid When Buying

  • Street vendors near bus stops and railway stations — especially those without a visible license. While some are legitimate sub-agents, the risk of counterfeits is higher.
  • Tickets from other states sold as "Kerala lottery" — other state lotteries exist but have completely different rules, prizes, and validity. Make sure the ticket says "Kerala State Lottery" and carries the department logo.
  • Pre-selected "lucky number" tickets at a premium — all tickets have equal odds. Paying extra for a specific number is a waste of money.
  • Bulk discount offers — the department does not offer bulk discounts. If someone offers 10 tickets for ₹350, those tickets are not genuine.

The only way to guarantee your Kerala lottery ticket is genuine is to buy it from someone who is licensed to sell it. There are no shortcuts, no apps, and no websites.

Know the Price

Weekly lottery tickets are always ₹40. Bumper tickets range from ₹200 to ₹500 depending on the series. If someone quotes a different price — higher or lower — walk away.
